GOP victory could spell doom for abortion rights

In the Senate debate on Monday, Republican Gabriel Gomez said that he is against a woman’s right to choose, but would not spend “one hour of a single day” working to change or support any law that would restrict that right. I was struck first by his unwillingness to stick up for what he believes in, then by the absurdity of his statement. Does Gomez really not know that Supreme Court justices, who rule on abortion matters, are appointed with the advice and consent of the Senate?

In fact, Gomez said that he might support a judicial candidate who would do away with a woman’s right to choose, and Democrat Edward Markey said he would not.
