Don’t punish majority in bearing down on the few

There has been a flurry of articles published lately in response to the state auditor’s report about alleged entitlement fraud. While it may be true, as it always is, that a few individuals will seek to take advantage of a system designed to help those who truly need added support, the fact is that legitimately eligible people who are improperly removed from entitlement programs outnumber those who cheat the system.

While it is important to safeguard entitlement programs from those who seek to commit fraud or abuse, it is also important to protect vulnerable populations from an overscrupulous system that ends up punishing the majority by bearing down on the few.
