‘Midwestern values’? You mean, the ones we instill from coast to coast?

I read your front-page article on new Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens (“Firm foundation: Midwestern values from childhood carry new Celtics coach Stevens far,” July 23). While I am hopeful that he will fulfill all expectations for his success, I find it offensive that his attributes were described as “Midwestern values” in the headline and again in the article. Since when are humility, integrity, and character values that are Midwestern?

As a person raised on one coast and living on the other, I hope that those values are no more the property of the Midwest than family values are the property of the conservatives.
