It’s a cheap shot to chide Tom Brady over his comments to the media on the Aaron Hernandez matter (“More needed to be said,” Sports, July 26). It’s wrong to criticize a professional athlete for being “cautious, guarded, and a little ill at ease” over his understandable reluctance to offer a more explicit statement regarding his former teammate, who has been charged with murder. I think Brady’s responses were entirely appropriate. He doesn’t owe the media or the public an explanation for his caution.
I think the entire organization, coach Bill Belichick in particular, handled the initial response to this still-evolving situation admirably. This is an ongoing case that requires a great deal of circumspection, and Brady, again, demonstrated why he is one of the most admired and unique athletes in professional sports.
