When is city going to clean up its act?

Jeff Jacoby spoke truth to power in his column on the sorry state of Boston’s litter-strewn streets (“Don’t trash my city,” Op-ed, July 24). Coincidentally, the day before it appeared, my wife and I met two tourists from Arizona who said they loved the city but couldn’t understand why the streets were so filthy. We had no answer.

London isn't as dirty. Neither is Paris, or Dresden, or Oslo. What's with Boston?

Jacoby made reference to the litter he spotted recently as he walked around Tremont and West Canton streets in the South End. We saw the same trash every day for 35 years on that very same block, where we lived.

That was one of the reasons we fled in December to Harbor Towers on the waterfront. There is still plenty of litter there, but it's not quite as gross.

When is Boston going to clean up its act?
