There’s no getting to yes when pathway there is a chasm

RE “ ‘GETTING to Yes’ in the Middle East” (Op-ed, July 30): Why can’t the Israelis and Palestinians get to yes? Because only the Israelis have offered painful concessions for peace. Because the Palestinians require release of mass murderers even to talk about talking. Because they still deny the legitimacy of a sovereign Jewish state in the Mideast. Because they refuse to declare an end to conflict. Because they continue to prepare their people for war, not peace.

Much time has passed and many mediators have grappled with this long conflict. Both sides know very well the other’s views. Hence, their mutual pessimism. The gaps between them simply are unbridgeable.
