Tremont Street through the years

One in an occasional series of Boston streets, this gallery gives us a good look at Tremont Street, especially during the early years. I usually choose photos exclusively because of their visual appeal because many of them don’t have detailed captions. But then when Head Librarian Lisa Tuite does her beautifully informative captions after researching them, I love being surprised by what is actually happening during that moment. Like the 1942 Park Street Station photo. Learning that those people are huddling together in the station because of an air raid alert is like a gift that makes the photograph all the more fascinating. — Thea Breite and Lisa Tuite
