October 12 1938 / fromthearchive / Boston Globe Archive photo / Billy the Goat, mascot of the mounted police attached to the Back Bay Station was back in the stable with George Lawes, his stable attendant, after he was rescued in traffic. Billy went AWOL during a horse training exercise at the Commonwealth Armory and was rescued by a Brookline woman who put him in a taxicab and took him home until she could locate his rightful owners.
