Girls’ cross country: 2011 All-Scholastics

RUNNERS OF THE YEAR

Catarina Rocha

Division 1: Peabody

Rocha crushed the competition at both the EMass Division 1 (18:06) and the All-State Division meets (18:12) this season. The junior finished third at the Foot Locker Northeast Regionals to earn a second trip to Nationals.

Division 2: Dennis-Yarmouth

The junior has been undefeated in the Atlantic Coast League for two straight years , and has strong wins at the Catholic Memorial Invitational, the Division 4 EMass meet, and the Division 1 All-State meet (18:34.4).

Olivia Brackett

Weston, senior

The Dual County League Runner of the Year was first at the conference meet, the EMass Division 5 meet, and the Bowdoin Park Invitational. The Weston Scholar-Athlete Award winner also finished ninth in the Division 1 All-State race.

Christine Davis

Acton-Boxborough, junior

Davis has been an asset to the Acton-Boxboro squad for three years, and has twice been named team MVP. She finished second at the DCL meet this year, third at the Ocean State Invitational, and third at the Division 1 EMass meet.

Priyanka Fouda

Wellesley, senior

Fouda, a repeat All-Scholastic selection, was undefeated in the regular season and also won the Division 3 EMass meet. The senior captain and two-time team MVP finished eighth at both the Brown Invitational and the Division 1 All-State meets.

Alexandria Giese

Franklin, senior

Giese, the Hockomock MVP, turned in a blistering time of 17:49.99 to win the Junior-Senior State Coaches Invitational. She had another strong title-winning run at the EMass Division 2 meet, and finished 11th at the All-State Divison 1 meet.

Sarah Keiran

Ipswich, senior

Keiran was named the Tigers’ MVP for the third straight season after her wins at the Division 6 EMass meet and the Catholic Memorial Invitational Division 2 meet. She is the Cape Ann League Small Runner of the Year.

Abigail McNulty

Bishop Feehan, sophomore

McNulty had a breakout 2011, making a name for herself amongst the Shamrocks’ star-studded roster with her third-place finish in the Division 2 All-State race as she helped Bishop Feehan to its third straight title.

Maggie Mullins

Andover, senior

A repeat All-Scholastic selection, Mullins was consistently near the front of the pack, finishing third at the Catholic Memorial Invitational , second at the EMass Division 1 meet (18:41), and third at the All-State meet (18:45).

Lauren O’Neil

Falmouth, freshman

O’Neil finished fifth in a time of 18:57 at the McIntyre Twilight meet. She was sixth at the Catholic Memorial Invitational, second in the EMass Division 2 championship race, and seventh at Division 1 All-States.

Kerry Phelan

Hamilton-Wenham, senior

Phelan finished third (19:24) at the EMass Division 3 meet and fourth (18:58) at the Division 1 All-State meet. The senior captain led the Generals to their seventh straight undefeated Cape Ann League regular season.

Kathleen Powell

Bishop Feehan, senior

Powell was second at the Division 2 All-State meet, with her 18:44 time, leading Bishop Feehan to the state title. This is the second All-Scholastic cross-country nod for the senior co-captain, who is also a member of the English Honor Society.

Mackenzie Shelgren

Masconomet, senior

Shelgren’s second place finish in 19:20 in the Division 2 EMass race was a big part of the Chieftains’ narrow title win over Lincoln-Sudbury. The captain also finished second at the Cape Ann League meet and was fifth at the All-States.

Erin Svensen

Bishop Feehan, senior

Svensen took 11th place at the Division 2 All-State meet to help the Shamrocks win their third straight state title. The senior co-captain and four-time Eastern Athletic Conference All-Star also captains the indoor and outdoor track squads.

COACHES OF THE YEAR

Keith Erwin

Division 1: Whitman-Hanson

Under Erwin, the Panthers were 8-0 in the Patriot League before winning the Division 3 EMass meet and the Division 1 All-State meet. The ’98 Whitman-Hanson Alum called fall 2011 “an amazing season ... one that I will cherish forever.’’

John Monz

Division 2: Weston

Weston went 8-0 and won the Dual County League title. Under Monz, the Wildcats nearly unseated perennial Division 5 EMass power Hamilton-Wenham, falling one point short. Weston finished third at the Division 2 All-States.

The All-Scholastic girls’ cross-country team was selected by the school sports staff. Selection is limited to MIAA schools that compete in EMass leagues.
