Roundup: Baylor survives in OT

Pierre Jackson scored 8 consecutive points during regulation and overtime to lift No. 6 Baylor to an 83-81 victory over West Virginia last night in the Las Vegas Classic championship game.

Jackson finished with 23 points, Brady Heslip added 19, and Quincy Acy had 15.

Baylor (12-0), one of six unbeatens in Division 1, tied the game at 76 on Jackson’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in regulation.

The Bears led, 83-78, with 2:02 left in overtime following another three by Jackson and field goals by Gary Franklin and Acy. Jabarie Hinds’s 3-pointer brought the Mountaineers (9-3) within 83-81, but his shot at the buzzer fell short of the rim.

Kevin Jones had 28 points and 17 rebounds for the Mountaineers, while Hinds had 18 points and seven assists and Darryl Bryant had 16 points.

The Mountaineers rallied from a 69-63 deficit and tied the score on consecutive 3-pointers by Hinds and Bryant. They took the lead for the first time since halftime at 74-71 when Bryant made three free throws with 2:51 left.

The remainder of the Mountaineers’ points in regulation were scored by Dominique Rutledge with two free throws with 2:23 left, the last scoring until Jackson made his 3-pointer with 18 seconds left.

Heslip scored 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the first half while Jones had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals in the opening 20 minutes.

Louisville 70, Western Kentucky 60 - Russ Smith scored 23 points, Gorgui Dieng had 13 points and 15 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double, and the No. 4 Cardinals (12-0) overcame a sleepy start to rally from an 8-point deficit in the second half and beat the visiting Hilltoppers (4-9).

Wisconsin 79, Mississippi Valley St. 45 - Jordan Taylor scored 17 points to lead the No. 13 Badgers (11-2) over the visiting Delta Devils (1-10) in Wisconsin’s final game before playing Nebraska Tuesday in its Big Ten opener.

Wagner 59, Pittsburgh 54 - Latif Rivers scored all 18 of his points in the second half - including six critical free throws in the final minute - to lead the Seahawks to a stunning upset over the 15th-ranked Panthers in Pittsburgh.

Kenneth Ortiz had 12 points and Tyler Murray added 10 for Wagner (8-3), which won its first game over a ranked opponent since knocking off 15th-ranked Alabama Nov. 24, 1978.

Pitt (11-2) saw its nine-game win streak snapped. Ashton Gibbs scored 14 points for the Panthers, who turned it over 18 times in their first loss to a Northeast Conference opponent in 71 games.

UNLV 85, California 68 - Anthony Marshall had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead the 21st-ranked Runnin’ Rebels (13-2) over the visiting Golden Bears.

Justin Cobbs had 20 points and five assists for California (10-3), while Allen Crabbe had 13 points and six rebounds and Harper Kamp added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Providence 80, Rhode Island 61 - Bryce Cotton scored 16 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Friars (11-2) past the Rams (1-11) in Kingston, R.I., for their seventh straight win.

Vermont 65, Towson 49 - Luke Apfeld scored 24 points on 11-of-11 shooting in 22 minutes as the Catamounts (6-7) handed the host Tigers (0-11) their 30th loss in a row.

Brendan Bald added 15 points for Vermont.

Maine 71, Brown 58 - Justin Edwards and Alasdair Fraser scored 17 points apiece to lead the Black Bears (6-4) over Brown (5-8) in Providence.

Albany 82, Dartmouth 74 - Gerardo Suero scored 23 points, his eighth game of 20-plus points this season, to help the Great Danes (7-5) down the Big Green (3-10) in Albany, N.Y.

Women

Wis.-Green Bay 65, Wisconsin 49 - Julie Wojta scored a career-high 29 points to help the No. 18 Phoenix win their 30th straight regular-season game, defeating the Badgers (4-8) in Madison, Wis.
