Meet the standout performers who earned All-Scholastic honors for their work this winter.
Matt Droney Catholic Memorial,
Droney was named the Catholic Conference Most Valuable Player after averaging 20.7 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds a game for the Knights. The senior 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard also passed the 1,000 point scoring mark this season and plans to attend prep school next year at Taft.
Kevin LaFrancis, Acton-Boxborough, Senior
LaFrancis earned the Dual County League MVP after averaging 19.9 points a game for the Colonials, who finished 22-2. The 6-6 senior center also played varsity golf and tennis. LaFrancis plans to attend either Maryland, Penn State, Delaware, or Tufts.
Jake Layman, King Philip, Senior
The 6-foot-8-inch center averaged 26.5 points, 16 rebounds, and 5.8 blocks per game for the Warriors this season, finishing his King Philip career with 1,752 points and 1,098 rebounds. The Maryland-bound senior was named the Hockomock League MVP for the second consecutive season.
Aaron Calixte, Stoughton, Junior
Calixte averaged 19 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds a game as a junior for the Black Knights, becoming a member of Stoughton’s 1,000-point club this season. A 5-foot-11-inch point guard, Calixte, earned Hockomock League All-Star honors and turned in a 29 point performance when Stoughton battled King Philip and Jake Layman on Jan 23. The Junior also plays varsity football.
Sayvon Houston, Brockton,
Houston was a double-double machine for the EMass champion Boxers. The 6-foot-6 center averaged 16.9 points, 14 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks a game. Houston turned in a 20 point-20 rebound game in the Division 1 South semifinals and a 22-13 performance at TD Garden in the EMass finals.
Quinton Dale, Winthrop, Senior
Dale averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks a game at forward for the defending Division 4 Champion Vikings. The senior earned Northeast Conference South MVP honors and plans to play for The Taft School next season. Dale also played varsity football and soccer.
Darien Fernandez, Wareham, Junior
Fernandez averaged 20.5 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6.5 steals a game for the one-loss Vikings, who made it to the Division 3 State semifinals. The point guard made an appearance on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays for a buzzer-beating halfcourt shot he made against Cardinal Spellman.
Joey Glynn, Cardinal Spellman, Senior
Glynn scored 1,425 career points and grabbed 803 rebounds for the Cardinals, averaging 19 and 12 this season for Catholic Central League MVP honors. A two-time All-Scholastic and a league All-Star in football, Glynn will play hoops for Bentley.
Stephen Haladyna, St. John’s Prep, Senior
The 6-foot-5-inch senior averaged 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists a game for the Eagles. Haladyna finished his career as Prep’s second-leading scorer with 1,374 points. Haladyna, who carries a 4.2 GPA, plans to play for Tufts.
Barrett Hanlon, Hopkinton, Senior
After missing the first four games with a broken right wrist, Hanlon returned to tally 17.9 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.4 steals per game for the Hillers. In his first four games back, the senior point guard averaged 20 points a game while shooting lefthanded.
Tyrese Hoxter, Charlestown, Junior
The 6-foot-4-inch junior averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals a game for the Townies, earning Boston City League All-Star recognition as his team took home the Division 1 North crown. Hoxter has narrowed his list of potential colleges down to Providence, Kansas State, Lehigh, and Gonzaga.
Malik James, Brighton, Sophomore
As a sophomore, James averaged 18.1 points, 8.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Bengals, while leading them to their first Division 2 EMass championship with a win over Stoughton. The point guard was named to the Boston City League All-Star team for his efforts.
Franklin Martinez, Lawrence, Senior
In his first season as a full-time starter, Martinez proved he belonged, averaging 15 points a game and leading the Lancers to the Division 1 North quarterfinals. The senior sharpshooter earned Merrimack Valley Conference Div. 1 MVP honors.
George Merry, Danvers, Senior
After averaging a respectable 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds a game last season, Merry become a force as a senior. The 6-foot-7-inch center dominated the NEC, scoring 15.3 points per game, while pulling in 11 rounds and blocking 8 shots a contest. Merry also upped his game in the post season, scoring 19.5 points a game, as Danvers earned the Division 3 State title.
Michael Thorpe, Newton North, Senior
Thorpe, who plans to play for Emerson, averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals per game for the Tigers and was named the Bay State League’s MVP. The senior point guard reached the 1,000-point mark this season and is also a league All-Star in volleyball.
COACHES OF THE YEAR
Edson Cardoso, Charlestown
Cardoso led the Townies to a 20-5 record and a Division 1 North title. For his work, the Lexington Christian Academy graduate earned Boston City North All-Star recognition. Cardoso played basketball at Eastern Nazarene College for four years and spent a year playing semi-pro.
Hugh Coleman, Brighton
In his third season as Brighton coach, Coleman led the Bengals to a 21-4 season that culminated in the program’s first Division 2 EMass title. The Charlestown alumni (’97) is a two-time Boston City South Coach of the Year and has a career record of 54-16.
Kevin Moran, St. Mary’s
Moran, who donned a St. Mary’s jersey 30 years ago when he played for the school, guided the Spartans to a 20-6 season that culminated in a Catholic Central Large championship and the Division 4 championship, St. Mary’s first in Moran’s eight years.
John Walsh, Danvers
Walsh led the Falcons to a 21-4 record and a Division 3 State Championship in just his second year leading Danvers. The Malden Catholic (’98) and UMass-Dartmouth (’03) grad has amassed a record of 34-14 and was named the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2011.
