Every Sunday, Boston Globe photographer Stan Grossfeld asks the subject of one of his photos to explain what's happening in the shot.
Who's up today: Blake Denman, 16, of Wenham paddleboarded past pelicans while on spring break in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., April 19, 2012.
Denman: “I rented this paddleboard. I’ve done this five times. It’s really fun and it’s good for getting six-pack abs. I saw a bunch of jellyfish and some dolphins next to me. Then a fish jumped and I heard a whoosh and there they were. I don’t think I ever saw a pelican before. I was surprised. Their big fat mouth surprised me. Right after this I reached for my GoPro [waterproof] camera but I fell off the board trying to turn it on. I can’t believe I’m the only one in the water. My grandparents said, ‘Brr, it’s too cold.’ But I thought it was wicked warm. The water’s 69 degrees. That’s as warm as it gets in the summer on the North Shore.’’
