David Ortiz deserves two-year extension from Red Sox

For what he has meant, he deserves 2-year deal

BALTIMORE - From a business point of view, the Red Sox have handled it right. They have been going year-to-year with David Ortiz, which, given the DH market and the fact that he is now 36, is the right thing to do.

But there’s more to it with Ortiz.

Cafardo just hit it 475 feet! Wake up Mr. Henry and smell the Papi!

Ortiz loves Ortiz. In sports, "respect" = money.

Wow, glad you don't run the front office. Year to year is a must with David, he needs incentive to stay in shape. Give a 2 year contract and he will be the erratic player that he was in the past.

Wow Nick has gone soft. The team is in last place so now is not the time. Also, they don't need to award contracts based on past performance, base them on the market. Reality is that DH's especially big money DH's have limited market value. Given all the dead money they have on the roster the last thing they need is to potentially add more. Look at it this way, Ortiz seems pretty productive on a one year deal this year, mostly becuase he is on a one year deal and is in shape and focused. No lifetime achievement contracts, especially on this team right now where the sense of entitlement the players have is still out of control!

David's a good guy and a pretty good hitter, but the money these guys make is fantasyland. It says a lot about our values - none of it good.

Nick is loving David now but a few years ago he was al about how David had lost his stroke. Let David go 3 for 50 and we will hear all the Boston scribes complain how he has lost his stroke.
