Patriots cut WR Anthony Gonzalez

The Patriots made a surprise move on Tuesday when they cut receiver Anthony Gonzalez.

The Colts’ first-round draft pick in 2007 signed in New England earlier in the offseason. Injuries limited him to 11 games over the past three seasons, but he declared himself healthy and excited for the opportunity with New England.

Gonzalez seemed like a good risk/reward type of player who could add to the Patriots’ depth as a slot receiver. However, he was not spotted on field last Thursday when reporters were present for offseason workouts.

The Patriots also announced the signing of rookie tight end Nick Melillo. Melillo, 23, went to Kentucky. The 6-foot-2, 226 pounder played in 32 games over three seasons, with 23 receptions for 240 yards and one touchdown.

The signings of seventh-round pick Alfonzo Dennard and veteran offensive lineman Jamey Richard also were made official.
