The Dodgers placed center fielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list Thursday for the second time this month because of a left hamstring strain and he is expected to miss a month. The move came after Kemp left Wednesday night’s game against Milwaukee after scoring all the way from first base on a first-inning double by Andre Ethier. He had been activated two days earlier . . . The Rockies placed All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the DL because of a strained left groin, suffered running out a grounder against the Astros Wednesday night. Tulowitzki underwent an MRI and the team was awaiting the results . . . The Braves will make a change at shortstop, calling up Andrelton Simmons from Double A Mississippi to replace Tyler Pastornicky, who has struggled defensively . . . A federal judge approved the settlement of a lawsuit brought by a trustee for Wall Street swindler Bernard Madoff’s victims against the owners of the Mets. The settlement calls for the Mets’ owners to pay up to $162 million but nothing for four years.

Spurrier continues push for stipend
Steve Spurrier is sticking with his plan to pay players. South Carolina’s outspoken coach, who first floated the idea at the Southeastern Conference’s spring meetings last year, trotted out his stipend plan again this week and said football coaches voted 14-0 to present the proposal to league athletic directors. The ADs will discuss it and decide whether to present it to school presidents and chancellors for an official vote Friday. Spurrier and his SEC colleagues would like to give football and men’s basketball players “approximately $3,500 to $4,000’’ - out of pocket - for the entire year to cover expenses . . . The Big 12 board of directors reaffirmed their support for a 10-team league, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be happy if the right No. 11 came along. Oklahoma State president Burns Hargis, who chairs the board, said he was “flattered’’ that Florida State and other schools have expressed interest in the league, but when the subject of Notre Dame was broached, Hargis had a different response. “That’s something we would have to pursue,’’ he said . . . Illinois sophomore Thomas Pieters shot a final-round 71 to win the men’s NCAA Division 1 golf championship at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, finishing three shots ahead of Julien Brun of TCU and Florida’s Tyler McCumber, son of PGA Tour player Mark McCumber. Alabama went wire-to-wire in stroke play to grab the No. 1 seed going into Friday’s match play . . . Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, facing trial next week on charges he sexually abused 10 boys, asked a state appeals court to review his case and to delay the criminal proceedings against him.

Mayweather set to begin jail sentence
Free time is about to run out for Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is due to begin a three-month jail sentence in Las Vegas stemming from a hair-pulling, arm-twisting attack in September 2010 on the mother of three of his children. Mayweather, 35, was initially due to begin his sentence Jan. 6. But Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa agreed at the last minute to let him remain free long enough to fight Miguel Cotto May 5 in Las Vegas. Mayweather won the bout and a guaranteed $32 million.

World record-holder Usain Bolt put his poor performance in the Czech Republic behind him with a season’s best 9.76 seconds in the 100-meter race at the Golden Gala in Rome. Bolt ran a relatively slow 10.04 in Ostrava last week, raising questions about his Olympic preparations. Former world record-holder Asafa Powell crossed second in 9.91 . . .
