The Washington Wizards announced Monday that Randy Wittman will return as coach next season, retaining the position he accepted after Flip Saunders was fired in January. The Wizards finished 20-46 - second-worst in the NBA - but they finished on an upswing, winning six of their last eight games. Wittman also appeared to connect better with Washington’s young roster than did Saunders, who was originally hired to lead a veteran-laded team when he came to Washington three years ago. Former No. 1 overall pick John Wall was among the players who publicly said they wanted Wittman to return . . . The Portland Trail Blazers hired former Los Angeles Clippers general manager Neil Olshey as the team’s new general manager. The announcement by the Blazers Monday came less than an hour after the Clippers announced that they and Olshey had decided to part ways . . . The Bobcats interviewed Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Quin Snyder in Chicago about their head coaching vacancy, said a person familiar with the situation . . . Jim Fitzgerald, who owned the Milwaukee Bucks during a successful era in the early 1980s and went on to own the Golden State Warriors, died Monday in Janesville, Wis. He was 86. A cause of death was not released . . . The Lakers exercised their $16.1 million contract option for next season on All-Star center Andrew Bynum.
Clemens team can’t call congressman

The judge in the Roger Clemens perjury trial in Washington, D.C., ruled that defense lawyers can’t call Representative Darrell Issa as a witness. Issa is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the panel that Clemens allegedly lied to in 2008 when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. Issa, a California Republican, wasn’t chairman at the time, and he had criticized the committee for holding the hearing on drugs in baseball . . . Pedro Borbon, who pitched 10 years for the Cincinnati Reds and helped the Big Red Machine win back-to-back World Series titles, died of cancer at his home in Pharr, Texas. He was 65. Obituary, B12.
Astros select Puerto Rican Correa No. 1
The Houston Astros selected 17-year-old shortstop Carlos Correa with the No. 1 pick in the baseball draft in Secacus, N.J., making him the highest selection ever to come from Puerto Rico. Correa, who has a strong arm and terrific instincts defensively, bested catcher Ramon Castro, who went No. 17 to Houston in 1994, as the highest-drafted Puerto Rican player . . . Mets ace Johan Santana will get two extra days of rest after his no-hitter. The team said Santana will make his next start Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the opener of the Subway Series . . . Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese said he’s OK after his heart started racing during a game over the weekend. Niese said that he’s expecting to have a procedure called an ablation next month at the All-Star break to help the condition . . . The Twins placed Carl Pavano on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
Sandusky jury selection set to begin

Jury selection is to begin Tuesday in the case against Jerry Sandusky, the 68-year-old former assistant Penn State football coach accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years. Sandusky’s hopes for a last-minute delay in his trial on charges he sexually abused 10 boys were dashed when the state Supreme Court issued a one-paragraph order that denied a sealed motion . . . Big Ten administrators would prefer a plus-one system over a four-team playoff to determine a national champion if the BCS can’t be maintained in its current form. In the plus-one format, the bowl games would be played, and then the top two teams would meet for the title . . . Keilani Ricketts struck out 12 in a five-hitter and Oklahoma beat Alabama, 4-1, night in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series best-of-three final in Oklahoma City.
Kurt Busch suspended for outburst

NASCAR suspended Kurt Busch one week for verbally abusing a media member after last Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Dover, Del. The suspension comes a month after Busch was placed on probation after getting in an altercation with Ryan Newman’s crew at Darlington. That probation has now been extended through the end of the year. Busch apologized in a statement Monday for his behavior . . . The Penguins acquired goaltender Tomas Vokoun from the Capitals for a seventh-round draft pick. Vokoun spent only one season with the Capitals and is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 . . . Boxer “Sugar’’ Shane Mosley is retiring, ending a career in which he won titles in three weight classes, beat Oscar De La Hoya twice, and never was knocked out. Mosley, 40, lost three of his last four fights, leaving his career record at 46-8-1.
