It was no surprise that Westwood defended its Division 1 girls’ lacrosse state championship. The Wolverines didn’t let a season-opening loss to Lincoln-Sudbury affect what would be a good season as they rebounded to finish 24-2 and No. 1 in the final Top 20 rankings.

Lincoln-Sudbury (23-2) finished in the No. 2 spot after a strong season culminated in its second straight North sectional championship.

Surprising Medfield came in at No. 3 after finishing the regular season 13-5 and grabbing the fourth seed in the South Division 2 bracket. Medfield defeated top-seeded Duxbury (ranked No. 11) and third-seeded Hopkinton (No. 9) to win the sectional title, then went on to win the Division 2 state title for the first time in school history, defeating North champion Winchester, which finished No. 5.

Others ranked after strong tournament runs were Scituate (No. 14), which lost in the D2 South semifinals; Marblehead (No. 15), which lost in the D2 North semis; and Sandwich (No. 18), which grabbed the No. 2 seed in the D2 South bracket with a 15-2-1 record.

In boys’ lacrosse, the story was Duxbury again. The Green Dragons, with 12 Division 1 college recruits, finished 23-2 and won their ninth state championship in 11 years.

In the final, Duxbury held off a determined Needham team, 10-8. For its postseason efforts, Needham finished No. 3. No. 2 was Concord-Carlisle, which finished undefeated and won the Division 2 state championship.

Division 3 champion Dover-Sherborn finished at No. 5. BC High (No. 13), Weston (No. 17), and Foxboro (No. 20) made it into the final Top 20 with strong postseason runs.
