Meet the standout performers who earned All-Scholastic honors for their work this spring.
Players of the Year:
Doug Gouchoe Concord-Carlisle
The Division 2 state champion Patriots were built around their 5-foot-9-inch All-American goalie, who will play for Air Force. Gouchoe led C-C to a 3.55 goals-against-average and didn't allow more than 7 goals in a game all season.
Reilly Naton Duxbury, Senior
On a team loaded with talented defenders, the 6-foot-2-inch, Yale-bound senior might have been the toughest to beat. Naton finished his career with three state championships in lacrosse and two in football, all while collecting a 3.8 GPA.
Billy Polk Dover-Sherborn,
A faceoff specialist and dynamic midfielder, Polk captained the Raiders to its first Division 3 state title. The two-time All American was the Tri-Valley League co-MVP and will play both lacrosse and football at Colby College.
Kevin Blair Hingham, Senior
At the front of the Harbormen's explosive attacking unit was the senior All American, who logged over 100 points while leading Hingham to a 20-4 record. A three-time Patriot League All-Star, Blair will bring his scoring ability to Providence College.
Henry Bumpus Concord-Carlisle, Senior
The defenseman was a force for the Patriots on the way to a Division 2 state title. The 6-foot-6-inch All American finished with perfect seasons in lacrosse and football, the latter of which he'll play at Brown this fall.
James Burke Duxbury, Senior
The All American was a force at long-pole for the state champion Dragons this season, as they held opponents to just 4.4 goals per game. Also a football player, he plays for Laxachusetts and will attend Penn State next season.
Ryan Cassidy Wellesley, Senior
A ground-ball machine and stick-checking extraordinaire, Cassidy was a force for the Raiders as they advanced to the Division 2 EMass title game. He finished the season with 175 ground balls, earning All-American honors, and will play at Amherst.
John Connor Darcey Wellesley, Senior
With the ability to take over a game in the cage, the two-time All American led the Raiders to the Division 2 Eastern Mass. title game with 186 saves this spring. The Penn State-bound senior also earned Bay State League MVP honors.
Alex Eaton Westford, Senior
The senior captain was named team MVP in his first season with the Grey Ghosts. Eaton recorded 49 goals and 22 assists en route to being named a Dual County League All-Star and All American. He will play at Lehigh University.
Paul Hellar Duxbury, Senior
A dynamic finisher with the ability to distribute, Hellar led an efficient attacking unit that put up more than 12 goals per game this spring. The senior earned All-American honors and will play at Fairfield University.
Kurt Hunziker Masconomet, Senior
The hulking, 6-foot-3-inch senior led a talented midfield that propelled the Chieftains to more than 13 goals per game this spring. The two-time All American and football All-Scholastic will play lacrosse at UMass-Amherst.
Matt O’Keefe, Duxbury, Senior
A two-time state-champion quarterback, the senior also brought it on the lacrosse field his senior season, using a 6-foot-4-inch frame paired with a long-pole to cause havoc on opposing attackers. The All American will play lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University.
Nico Panepinto Needham, Junior
With 54 goals and 40 assists, Panepinto was electric for the Rockets, who advanced to the Division 1 East championship game. The All-American junior, who is committed to Fairfield, scored 126 goals and tallied 121 assists in his career.
Max Randall Duxbury, Senior
The leader of the close defenders for the state champs, the 5-foot-10-inch All American finished his career as a three-time Patriot League All-Star. A football player an honor roll student, Randall is committed to Dartmouth College.
D.J. Smith Billerica, Junior
The junior All American finished the season with 295 saves for a save percentage of 66. He's started in the cage three straight years for the Indians, compiling a record of 56-12, and is committed to play at UMass-Amherst in 2013.
Kyle Soroka Acton-Boxborough, Senior
A solid two-way midfielder for the Colonials, Soroka was the leader on transition and a distributor on the attack. The All American finished with 30 goals and 39 assists. He'll play at Middlebury College this fall.
Greg Stamatov Foxborough, Senior
At the heart of Foxboro's standout season was the All-American goalie, who piloted the Warriors to an Eastern Mass.-best 3.5 goals-against-average. The Hockomock League All-Star in lacrosse, hockey, and football is Villanova-bound.
Thomas Stanton Catholic Memorial, Senior
The Union College-bound senior did it all for the Knights, scoring 46 goals and dishing out 28 assists as he became the first CM lacrosse player to earn All-American honors. Stanton also played for the Knights' soccer and hockey teams.
Ian Yanulis BC High, Junior
The 6-foot-2-inch junior defenseman was instrumental in the Eagles' midseason turn-around, guiding them to eight straight wins before falling to Needham in the Division 1 East semis. Yanulis, who is committed to Duke, also led his team in ground balls.
Coaches of the Year:
Coach of the year: Kevin Lynch Catholic Memorial
Since taking over at CM two years ago, Lynch has led the Knights to a 32-11 record, including a 19-4 mark this spring as they earned their first Catholic Conference Championship. Lynch was the Catholic Conference Coach of the Year.
Coach of the year: Brian McLaughlin Dover-Sherborn
McLaughlin has led the Raiders to the Division 3 title game in three of the last four years, picking up his first state championship with a 16-6 win over North Reading this spring. He started the D-S program in 1996.
Coach of the year: David Wainwright Needham
The Needham alum (1989) piloted the Rockets to an 18-6 record, leading them to the Division 1 state championship game. Wainwright has a career coaching record of 172-48 in nine years at Needham and also coaches Dover-Sherborn girls' soccer.
