Another day, another bit of bad news for the Red Sox.

Carl Crawford suffered what the Red Sox described as a “mild left groin strain” on Thursday when he played for Double A Portland. His rehab assignment has been stopped.

Under MLB rules, Crawford cannot play in another minor league game for five days (which started on Friday). Once his rehab assignment starts again, the 20-day clock begins anew.

Bobby Valentine said that Crawford felt something while turning second when he tripled in the game on Thursday.

Also:

• Clay Buchholz will make a rehab start for Triple A Pawtucket tomorrow, probably around 40 pitches. If that goes well, he would slot into the rotation after the All-Star break.

• Jacoby Ellsbury will play for Pawtucket tonight.

• Ryan Sweeney is off today. “I feel fine, ready to play,” he said. “I’m just waiting for them to make a decision.”

• RHP Chris Carpenter is moving to Single A Greenville for the next step on his rehab.

• Andrew Bailey (who is the proud father of a new baby girl) threw yesterday and is making progress to getting back on the mound. He was shut down a few weeks ago because of forearm tightness but that has gone away.

• RHP Clayton Moretensen is the 26th man today. That’s a new MLB rule for doubleheaders. He will be returned to Pawtucket after the second game. The Yankees called up RHP Cory Wade.
