In one of the biggest shockers in Olympic gymnastics history, world champion Jordyn Wieber failed to qualify for the all-around competition after being outpointed for one of the maximum two-per-country spots by Needham native Aly Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas in Sunday afternoon’s qualifying round.

“They just had a stronger day,” said national team coordinator Martha Karolyi, who said she could not remember the reigning global titlist not making the 24-athlete field. “That’s the sport.”

For Raisman, who placed behind both Douglas and Wieber at the US trials, topping the five-woman team was both satisfying and surprising. “I felt overwhelmed and really excited,” said Raisman, whose four-event score of 60.391 put her 26-100ths of a point ahead of Douglas and nearly 36-100ths ahead of Wieber, her roommate and best buddy. “It hasn’t even sunk in.’’

Raisman, who finished fourth in the all-around at last year’s world meet in Tokyo, had the top American score despite posting the lowest marks on vault and uneven bars. But her score on floor exercise (15.325), where she’s expected to win a medal, propelled her ahead of Douglas and Wieber, both of whom stepped out of bounds and were dinged with deductions.

“It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics,” said Wieber, “but I’m proud of Ally and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and that I was able to help the team get to the finals.
