The Patriots announced Saturday that 31-year-old offensive lineman Robert Gallery has retired, before he ever played a game with the team.

Gallery, a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Raiders and Seahawks, had joined New England as a free agent March 21. A first-round draft pick, second overall, by Oakland in 2004 out of Iowa, Gallery had struggled during training camp and was working with the second team.
