Notes: Peyton Manning uneven in Broncos debut

Peyton Manning got intercepted near the goal line on the game’s opening possession and watched from the sideline the rest of the night as the Denver Broncos beat the Bears, 31-3, in the teams’ exhibition opener Thursday in Chicago.

All eyes were on Manning and the results were mixed for the four-time MVP. Considering he missed all of last season with a nerve injury in his neck that weakened his throwing arm and led to his tearful farewell from the Indianapolis Colts, it was hardly a surprise.

Manning is trying to show he still has something left with Denver and on a cool and rainy night, he completed 4 of 7 passes for 44 yards.

Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler warmed up but sat out, one day after his fiancée gave birth to a boy named Camden Jack.

It’s Tebow time

After months of hype and a summer highlighted by constant media scrutiny, Tim Tebow is set to make his playing debut for the New York Jets in their preseason opener against the Bengals Friday night in Cincinnati. Coach Rex Ryan plans to have Mark Sanchez and the rest of the starters play about one quarter, and Tebow could play about two quarters with the backups . . . Jets left guard Matt Slauson agreed to take a pay cut, reducing his salary by about $258,000 this season, according to a person familiar with the deal. Slauson’s entire salary of $1.05 million this season is now guaranteed — believed to be a major reason the offensive lineman accepted the restructured deal last week. Slauson was scheduled to earn $1.31 million in the final year of his rookie contract.
