Jonathan Fanene (98) was cut on Tuesday by the Patriots.

TAMPA -- The Patriots waived defensive tackle Jonathan Fanene with a “failure to disclose physical condition” designation that is likely the first step in the Patriots trying to recoup all or some of his $3.85 million signing bonus.

The designation is new this year and was also used by the Colts on Tuesday for an unknown player.

It is believed that Fanene had some sort of chronic injury, likely arthritis, that the team didn’t know about until he started missing training camp practices.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who said Tuesday it “just didn’t work out” with Fanene, didn’t expand on his original comments Wednesday.

“It just didn’t work out,” Belichick said before a joint practice with the Buccaneers. “Nothing to add other than that. It just didn’t work out.”

Angelo Wright, Fanene’s agent, did not return calls seeking comment.

Ross Tucker of Sirius NFL radio first reported the move.
