OAKLAND, Calif. — Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine got stuck in traffic after picking his son up at San Francisco International Airport and didn’t arrive at Oakland Coliseum until about three hours before the first pitch on Friday night.
He should have kept on driving and never looked back.

At least freefalls are for free. And Peter, it would have been illuminating to compare the lines in yesterday's games of the "players" we received in exchange for Reddick, Moss, and Kottaras. P.S. It must be painful watching and writing these games up, too. Fortunately, we slept through it. In fact, I've designated the remainder of the Sox's season as a "west coast trip -- game at 11."
The Sox need big help at the top management and coaching positions. They need to hire some good old knowledgeable baseball people. Their scouting and judgement of talent is terrible. They bring in lousy players and trade away good ones. That is because right now their people don't know enough about baseball to make good decisions. Time is running out. It doesn't take long to destroy a baseball franchise. Just thinking.
Does Marc Melancon ever not get lit up? I can't believe he was the closer for the Astros. I could see where it would be tough pitching in the AL East but everyone in the AL hits him. Lucky for him that this season has been such a disaster or more focus would be on him and his poor results. Cherington's worst signing to date.
