Valentine slams Red Sox for ‘weakest roster’

TORONTO — Bobby Valentine was speaking the truth.

He said what we are all thinking, but should the manager of the team say it out loud? Well, Valentine did. His bosses, who created this horrible Red Sox roster, probably didn’t like it, but such is life and such is the whirlwind that is Bobby Valentine.

Comments

No, Bobby V should not have publicly said it but he is absolutely right about this roster.

Ben Cherington has done NOTHING to strengthen this team all year long.

NOTHING!!

And Valentine should be very angry over the lack of discipline handed out to Alfredo Aceves.

I'm beginning to believe it was Lucchino who "forced" Cherington to suspend Aceves for those 3 games a month ago. Aceves stormed into Bobby V's office while Lucchino and Cherington were meeting with BV re: the Dodger trade so LL saw firsthand what an out of control nutjob AA is. Pretty obvious if left to his own decision making process Ben Cherington is not going to discipline anybody for anything. Aceves showed up Valentine in the dugout after his argument with Pedey and Cherington did nothing. And now this.

If I'm Bobby V I plan my own Aceves suspension and I don't pitch the guy the rest of the season.

Ben Cherington, taking over the role of Boston media darling from Theo Epstein, has not had a good year.

Let's be honest - something has to give here. We have a manager who has lost credibility with his team by publicly stating how weak the players are. We have a general manager who does not back up his team manager. And we have a front office that says little, other than respond to rumors the team is for sale. Without placing blamce, this is NOT a good situation, and certainly not an environment conducive to winning a championship. As it always is, the ball (no pun intended!) is in the hands of leadership. It is up to leadership to lead, to take action. Not sure I have much confidence in that happening.

Bobby was right to speak the truth and say what was on his mind. Ben on the other hand doesn't appear to have a spine and the guts that are needed to stand up when needed and be firm with the players. Aceves to me is a complete jacka** and needed to be traded on the spot, if not released. He is a major canceron this team as he was on the Yankees.

He's right, and it's from the top on down.

Bobby is absolutely right.  "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit."

This whole mess is on Ownership! Bobby Valentine has aged 10 years dealing with this ownership and these so-called players. At the end of season the only thing that should be left in the clubhouse are the brooms!

I can't believe that anyone would still be buying season tickets. If you do, expect to get about $12 a ticket on re-sale. This is one of the worst Sox teams I've ever seen.

Please ... just stop apologizing for this guy. He was a fruitcake 10 years ago ... he's a fruitcake now. Why the Red Sox ever got involved with him is beyond me.

As much as I dislke Valentine as a manager and commentator he is 100% correct is his assessment of his current roster. My sense is that he is going public to hasten his own departure as soon as possible. The one guy that comes out smelling like a rose in this whole mess is Terry Francona. He told ownership last year that the team was in trouble and they shot the messenger. So, the fans suffer through an intolerable high cost of attendence season. We should all stay home next year and watch reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies on cable instead of NESN.

Everyone laughed at me back in March when I said this Red Sox team would win 78 games. Turns out, I was optimistic. Sox management had lots of priorities over the off-season, but clearly putting together a contending team was way down the priority list. This team came out of Spring Training with Ellsbury, Pedroia, Gonzalez, Lester, Becket and 20 question marks. I'm sick of people calling out the players for lack of effort, chicken & beer etc. When a star player signs a long-term deal on the promise of being a perennial contender then has to break camp with a roster like the one Cherington put together, can you blame them for being surly? To this day, you hear Tony Mazz etc on the radio talking about the "under-achieving Red Sox", about the waste of talent, and how this team should have won 95 games. On what planet? This was a lousy team in Spring Training, it was a lousy team in April and it’s a lousy team today. Reality is there are way more players who gave us more than expected (Ortiz, Middlebrooks, Ross, Doubrant, Morales, Padilla, Podsednik, Ciriano, Saltalamachia, Nava...) than gave us less. Two indisputable facts: (1) The 2012 Sox aren't, never were, and were never designed to be a contending team (2) the blame for that is not on the players, not on Bobby V, but on the bozos who decided the Red Sox didn't need talent in 2012.

You want honesty, Boston media? You got it. Now shut up about Valentine. He's not coming back, he knows it, you know it, we know it. Bad call by management? Very likely a lame decision. He's not the issue anymore, as other commenters and Cafardo know. Move on to talking about what's possible for next year - including new ownership, despite the denial.

Valentine has managed in the majors for many years, and he has never had a championship team.  He holds the record for managing the longest time without ever having a winner.  Unfortunately, he has brought his losing ways to Boston.  The team that he started out with was not a lot different than the Red Sox team that almost won the pennant last season.  It will take some tme to undo all of the problems that he has created.

Valentine is a head case, and he has been a cancer in the clubhouse.  Get rid of this bum as soon as possible.

Valentine is a clown.  Get him out of town now!
