Terry Francona may have interesting options

It’s not inconceivable that Terry Francona and Brad Mills, manager and bench coach for years in Boston, reunite somewhere in 2013.

Francona’s options appear to be growing with word that both Angels manager Mike Scioscia and Tigers manager Jim Leyland could be in danger of being dismissed this offseason. Scioscia is a long shot to lose his job, since he is signed up through 2018 at big money, but Angels owner Arte Moreno certainly has deep enough pockets to eat the contract if he really feels Scioscia is the problem.

A first baseman's glove for Nava? Why? Please tell me it's only as a back-up option, defensive replacement. You're not thinking about him as a full time first baseman for the Sox next season, are you? but Only one thing comes to mind when I think about James Loney. Zzzzzzzz. The last thing the Red Sox need going forward in 2013 is another laid back, emotionless player. Haven't the Sox seen enough of these types? He steps up to the plate as if someone just woke him up from a deep sleep. Good fielder, sleepy bat. Let him walk. Same with Ross. He's played chunks of the season as if he's sleep walking or in a coma. Average defense and arm. To think the Sox are considering a big salary increase and a multi year contract for this guy is another example of the Red Sox continuing to accept mediocrity. He seems like a good, likeable guy but the sox need more from their outfielders. He was acquired to be a platoon player (with Ryan Sweeney) but with Sweeney's injuries, Crawfords injuries, Ellsbury's injuries, he was forced to play almost full time. He's t been just OK. The Sox are going to need some dynamic players. He's about a notch above Loney in that regard. Brad Mills. Hope not. If he had even the smallest amount of success with Houston, perhaps, but even then just a brief consideration. I'd consider Lowell. I think he'd command respect and he'd get it, too. Not crazy about Farrell. Why the Sox are hung up on him is beyond me except for his former ties with the team. After this horrible season which, to paraphrase Bill Belechick, has been been horrible in every aspect of the game, it's time for some new, creative and bold thinking. I guess the Sox might have thought Valentine met that description. If so, it shows just how far the Red Sox have to go to become a playoff, championship contender again. I actually thought an earlier suggestion of yours was also a good possibility: Bill Mueller. It will take some very careful consideration on the Sox part. Hope their up to this type of a challange. Ciaraco. Needs work for the outfiled but winter ball may be very beneficial. Really like his speed, good throwing arm and if he learns to stop chasing the outside, off the plate stuff, he might be able to have a very respectable batting average for an entire season. Potential is there for something good. Hope the Sox can find someone who knows how to bring out long term. May make Ellsbury more expendable.

Agree with comments on Farrell and Loney. Why the infatuation with Farrell? He was brought to Toronto to work with their young pitchers and they are all injured or underproducing, both of which are attributabe to Farrell. As for Loney, if the Sox go cheap and start the season with Loney as the starting IB, fans should show their displeasure by not buying tickets to the games. Sox need a IB, SS, OF and starting pitcher better than Buchholz or Lester. They have the resources, both financial and with prospects, to make it happen.

Sorry for some typo's. Rushing.

Why would the Yankees be interested in Cody Ross? He’s a right-handed dead pull hitter, which plays great in Fenway Park (152 wRC+ home) but almost nowhere else (86 wRC+ road). Sure, Ross can definitely hit lefties, but he isn’t much against righties and he’s a poor defensive outfielder. He has decent range and can run some balls down, but he’s also one of the most fundamentally unsound players you’ll ever see. Can’t play the wall properly, misses the cutoff man or just flat out throws to the wrong base, dives when he should be keeping the ball in front of him … it’s brutal.
