Patriots’ defensive breakdowns loom large

BALTIMORE — So much for the new and improved Patriots. You know, the ones with an airtight defense and a newfound running game. Like the real NFL officials, that version of the Patriots never showed up Sunday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

Now, we have a version of the Patriots we haven’t seen in 10 years. The Patriots are now below .500 for the first time since starting the 2003 campaign with a loss in Buffalo. They are 1-2 for the first time since 2001. That is both a testament to the metronomic success of the Patriots’ organization and the fact that change is never easy and slow to come.

WOW turn out the lights because a kicker pulls a field goal, and a maybe good field goal we should send Bill with Bobby V. Grow up with your articles please

Devin McCourty continues to play terribly both against the run and especially against the pass. He's worse than last year if that's possible. The Patriots should sit him down and give someone else, anyone else, a chance. The Ravens passed to his side over and over again. Am I the only one watching the game. Why don't the defensive coaches see what I'm seeing. Secondly, our pass russ is non existent. Maybe it's our defesive schemes or something but Flacco had all day to pass. Makes some changes. This is the second year in a row that offenses march down the field on us as if we were a pop warner team. Make some changes coach. Youe supposedly a defensive genious but I'm sue not seeing it.

Agree with Brian McCourty is at best the third or fourth best corner on this team. He looks lost in time and space anytime he needs to cover deep. At least two balls that he should have intercepted which would have changed the game. Where is Ras Dowling

I agree with Chris Gasper. The officials did not lose the game for the Pats on Sunday night -- the defense failed (again). Poor defense has cost the Pats 2 Super Bowls against the Giants and last night's game. The Pats will NEVER win another Super Bowl until they can build the kind of defense that stops the other team in crunch time. You simply CANNOT allow the other team to march down the field on you TWICE in the last 5 minutes of a game to score the winning points. Unforgivable !!

They have gone through so many players in the past several years that you have to think it is a coaching problem on defense. The db's loked like they were just running around confused last night. I'm no coach but they always seem to play the receiver even when they are in an excellent position to knock a ball down or make a catch.  They seldom turn around when covering to see if the QB has thrown and I think that is because they lack confidence and skill and are afriad they will lose their man if they turn around to look. Also the tackling was pathetic by the db's last night. They seem to be hoping some one else will take out the receiver after the catch, particluar if the reciever is big - they look like they are afrid to get hurt and just put in the appearance of trying to tackle. I have seen this for years but last night was horrendous.

There was no pass rush to speak of, which didn't help the DB's.  Did they blitz even once?  And what happened to Chandler Jones - he was invisible last night.

Last week Ras Dowling was uniform, but did not see the field. This week did not see him at all. If this guy is hurt again he should be cut! He was hurt all the time at UVA, but the genius still drafted him in the second round. Also can we ever blitz? tThe 4 man D line is not getting to the QB. After year after year of horriblre D, can we all agree that BB is not a Defensive Genius!!!

Take away Ray Rice and Flacco is a second tier qb.
