Red Sox are sizing up Jarrod Saltalamacchia

There’s a lot to like about Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

His 24 home runs are tied for third among major league catchers. He also ranks among the leaders with 42 extra-base hits and 56 RBIs.

I hope they hang onto Salty. I'm guessing that there's few catchers who keep notes like Varitek did so that shouldn't be a comparison. The Sox are stat geeks so there should be plenty of information for pitchers to prepare with. Plus, like Schilling, they could keep notes themselves. With the amount of money pitchers make and the fact that they pitch every five days, I don't think the catcher should have to do the legwork for them. And a pitching coach should be involved with game planning. Salty plays hard and has a good attitude, something in short supply.

I would be curious to learn Saltalamacchia's batting average when he puts the ball in play. He strikes out, swings and misses too often for my tastes.

Good trade material in a package..too many strikeouts....not enough people thrown out.
