Replacement refs a nightmare in Patriots loss

BALTIMORE — There wasn’t a lot of good feeling or dignity at the end.

The Patriots blew a 13-0 lead. They blew a 30-21 fourth-quarter lead in the final four minutes. They lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 31-30, Sunday night on a buzzer-beating 27-yard field goal by rookie Justin Tucker.

As bad as the officiating was, the patriots defense was worse.  Also, I can't really blame the officials for all the whistles.  The players were grabbing, puching and shoving each other all night.  They had to start making calls to bring some order to the mess, but the players never let up.  There was illegal contact by the Pats secondary on practically every down and the Ravens defense held on every down.  It was, at times, unwatchable.

Timely Springsteen and Red Sox references in a column purportedly about the Patriots. Nothing like waking up to a Shank piece with a 50 cent stamp affixed to it.

This is the continuation of The Curse of ReeShay! Not since Reesahy Caldwell was 20 yards open and everyone saw him but Brady in the AFC Champ game vs. Manning 1 several years ago when the Pats needed but one first down, have the Pats had a late game drive in a big game to seal a victory! More concerning about that is the continual flocking of the herd to Fenway to see a team that the owners gave up on when they traded Youk for two hacks to the contending Sox.....and HOW can a team nearly sell out while 20 GB and cheer for the Sox when they are playing a team that could potentially knock OUT the Yanks!!! Aren't we as Sox fans supposed to route for two teams.....The Sox, and the team that is playing against the Yanks??? The Sox are a Triple A team and the only team playing versus the Yankees over the weekend was the team that absent minded fools cheered against yesterday when our Triple A Sox beat the team one game back of the bombers!

Surely the NFL owners are making enough money to reconcile with the NFL referees. This craziness must stop, ASAP.

Terrible officiating last night! The refs and the Pats gave the game away. Benching Ridley for dropping a pass was just plain stupid!

I agree with the Ridley comment, but since he was sitting there McCourety should have been sitting next to him! The Defense was horrible.

I see the curious logic to their madness.See, after all the fines are paid, the impoverished league will have enough money to pay the real refs.

A phantom offensive PI [which is almost NEVER called] on Edelman stopped a Pats drive [and their momentum when they were about to go up 17-0 which would have COMPLETELY removed Rice from the game and put the game on Flacco's inadequate shoulders].

And another non-PI call against Mayo gave the Ravens their FIRST 1st down of the game after 3 three-and-outs in the first quarter. Then another MADE-UP-OUT-OF-THIN-AIR PI on McCourty [that even Collinsworth called out as BS] let the Ravens out of their end in the 4th Quarter to eventually cut the Patriots' lead. Another fabricated-out-of-whole-cloth holding call on Spikes negated a VITAL Pats sack [and we'd all be talking about how the Pats new, revamped D made. a. play. when they had to to win the game] and would have put the Ravens at 3rd & 16. I can remember ONE bad call against the Ravens- the 15 yarder on Harbaugh. That's it.

The Pats went in there and smacked a gang of thugs collectively known as "the Ravens" in the mouth, took their heart, made them look lifeless and flat and ALL of the great things we could and should be saying this morning are not to be due to bias in favor of Baltimore- a team we OWN.

The Pats were the great team we've all become [too] used to seeing last night- and Belichick's not losing 2 games in a row and their resiliency and their fighting back against a devastating loss to win a game they were supposed to lose should be the story. I feel as though I am in an episode of the twilight zone and am seeing an alternate reality that I [and a few million Pats fans] know is not the way it's supposed to be.

Shaughnessy is a jackwad. It's your cheating coach and lousy D that lost the game, not the refs.

LOVE to see coach pisssed off, and that kweer Bradyt as well.

Ref blaming Mass holes.

Blaming us for what? Being minimally observant?

I thought it was obvious he was just trying to get the official's attention that he has to wait for a reply review before running off the field.  I expect the league will ignore it.  The press is begging for BB to take a hit for something that essentailly didn't happen.

I can't belive they lost. The shills at 'EEI tell me everyday how great the Pats and Bill B are. I sure during one ofm the many paid interviews on'EEI we will find out the truth. Maybe if we all buy overpriced tent tickets from 'EEI everything will be O.K.

You know what else had no flow, in addition to last night's game?  Your article.

If allowed how could a field goal be reviewe?

An endzone camera will show the flight of the ball. Draw a vertical line extending the goal post.

I don't know but why not?

Being a Jets fan you can truly imagine my feelings towards Belichick in general...but this time I'm standing by his side. The frustration he showed after yesterday's game is one that's obviously across the entire NFL, the players, coaches and fans. It's one thing for replacement refs it's another for consistant sophomoric calls, missed calls, and calls that make no sense what so ever. The league is totally at fault not Bill Belichick...the field goal right or wrong wasn't the first questionable call. I watched numerous games yesterday including the Jets with Smith diving under the punter, never touching him and there's the call. More b/s. This has got to end NOW. Bill thanks for standing up for ALL OF US fans and your players...it's greatly appreciated.

This is something that all fans can agree on. Robert Kraft and the other owners are showing their contempt for the fans. I hope that players are not injured because of this.

Robert Kraft and the other owners are making a travesty of the game. The NY Times reported that it would only cost each owner about $100,000 per season to settle with the referees. It's disturbing that Kraft and the other owners are willing to compromise the integrity of the game for such a small amount. It's unfortunate that the owners have such conempt for the fans. In addition, players could be injured because the referees are not calling penalties to protect the players from dirty hits. I watched the first half last night. I did not watch the second half because the game was not enjoyable with the poor job that the referees were doing.

I so agree with Pats in DC comments. The Ravens from the start wanted a street fight, or gang war. This of course was incited by the head gang banger, Ray Lewis. You could see early on it was to try to intimidate the Pats, draw them into fights. There were no calls at first to stop this madness, then things finally got out of control. Then every thing became a penality. What a disgrace. The double murderer Lewis got just what he wanted from his fellow thugs, a gang war! But the Pats did the right thing, and stayed away, but the more they tried the more the refs drew them in. But when all was said and done, the Pats no sacks, at least 3 interceptions dropped, terrible play calling by McDaniels, and lastly, when will NFL coaches go for 2 pt. conversion. They had 2 chances to make it a 3, or 10 pt. spread. I guess the genius BB doesn't want to get second guessed. Two weeks in a row I believe he was outcoached. That shouldn't happen to genius!

WAS WE ROBBED? Vince said the ball did not go through. Why was there no review?

Good to see the Pats at 1-2.  Now let's make it 1-3.
