It’s still very early in the season, but Sunday night’s 31-30 loss to the Ravens has to have caused a lot of concern inside the defensive meeting rooms at Gillette Stadium.
Faced with the first decent test of the 2012 season, the Patriots defense failed almost across the board in a performance that was reminiscent of the two biggest stinkers from last season: the losses at Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

Good analysis Greg but a few ommisions and disagreements. The feeling I get, with agreement from all who I know that watched was that Belecheck has lost it a little when it comes to defense and maybe coaching in general. I know they played in the big game last year but in that game and again on Sunday night the defensive genius coach's defense couldn't make crucial stops when they had to. Flacko through the ball further down the field than Brady who passes were mostly short accurate throws. I thought Brandon Loyd was going to be a deep threat? I think everyone wonders why Brady hardly ever throws the ball down the field. With McCoirty and Arrington dropping easy interceptions that would have closed out the game the defense was troubling. Lastly, when will McCourty learn to turn his head around when chasing a receiver down the sidelines? Is that so difficult? We all feel he's a joke. Not good at his position. Walker was the standout player on offense and of course Tom. Running Danny Woodhead as much as they did was also a joke. Josh needs to re-learn how to be an offensive coordinator. Without Brady and Wlker it wouldn't have been that close!
Look at the difference between the Ravens' pressure on Brady and the Pats' pressure on Flacco. It all comes down to the creative use of the blitz. Come on, Bill. Any qback will find receivers if he's got 5 seconds to look around.
Great article. Love reading these. The Pats have a young team, especially on defense. They're going to have uneven performances. I like where they're going on both sides of the ball and think they're going to finish strong, so long as there aren't major injuries. As the Giants have shown, it's more important how you finish than to have a great record during the season.
I have been saying for years in BB we don't trust. How many big games are the Pats going to lose at the buzzer. BB doesnot win the close games! He is dependent on Brady to win! It's obvious. I must have written this 50 times over years. where is the defensive genius? Overrated!!!
