Twins baserunner Alexi Casilla (partially obscured), though standing on the base, is called out by umpire Brian O’Nora for interfering with Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta when Peralta backs into him while pursuing a popup at Comerica Park.

Every Sunday, Boston Globe photographer Stan Grossfeld asks the subject of one of his photos to explain what's happening in the shot.

Who’s up today: Twins baserunner Alexi Casilla (partially obscured), though standing on the base, is called out by umpire Brian O’Nora for interfering with Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta when Peralta backs into him while pursuing a popup at Comerica Park, Detroit, Sept. 22, 2012.

Peralta: “I never saw a play like that, ever. In that situation, I didn’t see where he was. I was trying to catch the ball when I bumped into him and fell over. You’re supposed to look at home plate, that’s why the umpire called him out. The umpire called him out because he was looking the other way. Casilla said, ‘What happened? I said, ‘I don’t know, either.’ It was a good call and it worked out for me. I guess he could have called the batter out, too.”

Casilla: “There was a pop fly to the infield. The first thing you think of is to go back to the base. So I’m standing on the base. I didn’t think he was going to hit me, but he backpedaled and hit me and he fell down and the ball got away. The umpire said, ‘You’re out!’ And I said ‘Why?’ He said I had to go around the base. I think he meant don’t make contact with him, but that was hard to do because that ball was hit right on top of the bag. So what am I supposed to do? I told the umpire, ‘Damn, there’s still a lot of things I don’t know in baseball.’ ”

O’Nora: Declined comment.
