Tigers’ Cabrera wins first Triple Crown in 45 years

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Miguel Cabrera became the 15th player to win baseball’s Triple Crown on Wednesday night, the reluctant superstar thrust into the spotlight after joining an elite list that includes Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig.

Cabrera’s milestone wasn’t official until the Yankees pinch hit for Curtis Granderson in their game against the Boston Red Sox. Granderson had homered twice to reach 43 for the year, tied with the Rangers’ Josh Hamilton and one shy of Cabrera.

A great feat, although Posey of SF had a higher batting average.  Of all the Triple crown winners since there were two leagues, only five have had Ave., HR, and RBI totals higher than anyone in either league.  If you had to guess who they are and you went with the greatest names you would be right.  Cobb in 1909 (with a whopping 9 HR), Hornsby in 1925, Gehrig in 1934, Williams in 1942 and Mantle in 1956.  Maybe more remarkable is to do it twice.  Williams in '42 and '47 and Hornsby in '22 and 25.  How would you like to build a fantasy team around these guys?
