Chandler Jones named top rookie

The NFL honored Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones as defensive rookie of the month for September.

Jones, the 21st overall pick in the draft, started all four games, and has been credited by the Patriots coaching staff with 19 total tackles (7 solo), three sacks, five quarterbacks hits and two forced fumbles. His first forced fumble, against Tennessee, was picked up by fellow rookie Dont’a Hightower for a touchdown.

Jerod Mayo was the last New England player to win defensive rookie in the month when he was recognized in October 2008. Mayo went on to be named defensive rookie of the year.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was named offensive rookie of the month.
