The frequency is long familiar to New England sports fans, the number 850 having been associated with WEEI since 1994. The voices, too, are familiar, with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic doing their popular Felix Unger/Oscar Madison routine on ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning’’ program for 13 years.
But the station and the show have never been associated with each other — until Friday morning, that is.

For us old-timers, 850 AM meant the old WHDH radio. During the 1960s, when not too many games were televised, WHDH 850 was where you tuned to listen to the Red Sox with Curt Gowdy ("Hi neighbor, have a 'Gansett"), the Celtics with Johnny Most ("this is Johnny Most, coming to you from high above courtside at the Boston Garden"), and the Bruins with Bob Wilson - probably the best collection of radio play-by-play announcers ever to work in the same city at the same time.
