Bobby Valentine era ends without rancor

Ivan DeJesus Jr. took a third strike from Yankees pitcher Freddy Garcia at 10:33 p.m. Wednesday, bringing an end to the worst Red Sox season in decades.

Fourteen hours and 14 minutes later, the team announced it had fired Bobby Valentine.

Why didn't you and Shaugnessy collaborate for just ONE article, and save some print.

Cherrington is the wrong guy to orchestrate the rebuilding of the Red Sox.  I'm sure to many in the organziation he fits the classic better-than-nothing perception of a GM and perhaps is the type of warm body that the hierarchy needs to fill for its Mr. Blame Boy role.  And it's my belief that Big Ben's continued presence in that roll will only serve to extend and preserve the hangover of the 2012 season.

It's no surprise to many that the teams that continue to reappear year in and year out during the playoffs have outstanding GM's, and we all  know who they are.  The Red Sox do not need a GM who cautiously hangs on every word before he spits it out (you know, the politically correct type).  We need a guy who is direct, confident and knows how to lead.    Unlike Theo, Ben is controllable and that's a virtue that Luchino savors.  So at the end of the day, we all know that Cherrington is safe for the moment but in reality most of us know that Bobby V. should not be the only guy tossed.

A manager should keep personnel problems in house not in the media.
