The next manager of the Red Sox will come from a division rival, a team source saying late Saturday night there was a deal to bring John Farrell back to Boston.
Farrell will become the 46th manager in team history after spending two seasons as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. Compensation has yet to be announced, although a team source said that Mike Aviles will be going to Toronto with a player coming back to the Sox.

Hopefully he can resurrect some of the Sox magic that disappeared nearly two years ago. They should not have given up Aviles though. He may not be an All-Star but he was more than dependable. we'll see what happens. Right now the jury is still out.
I fail to understand the fascination with Farrell. Seems like another of the 'good old boys" coming home to roost. I was hoping for a fresh face...Ausmus comes to mind...to change the face and attitude of the moribund group. I am hoping I am wrong
Its all about communication. This situation should be much better than what they just had.
Need to know the compensation. Mike Aviles and which prospect?? Do like the Farrell hire because he's a hard a&^ and hopefully will help straighten out the pitching staff. If Farrell can get Buccholz. Lester and Bard back on track the Sox will contend next year. It's ALL about the pitching
Though I do not think Farrell is the right pick, given his managing audition in Toronto, we have no choice but to support him and wish him well now. If I read this correctly, Aviles is all we give up and we get a player -- probably a minor leaguer with little upside -- in return from Toronto. This tells me that the Sox are fully committed to Iglesias at short... as in short batting average, long fielding range.
Farrell failed in Toronto. Pena won a Manager of the Year in KC, and a World Series in NY. Was Pena too "Spanish" for the Red Sox? This is the organization that took 12 years before signing Pumpsie Green.
Terrible decision. Good-bye Sox for another decade!
