I hope the anti-Farrell camp (I was firekeeper) closes ranks and supports the guy. What's the point of opposing him now? What's done is done and we're all Sox fans, hoping for the best.
I wish him well too but I still won't be buying tickets.
Dan, my memory is still pretty good and before finishing the entire article, I would have appreciated at least one "mea culpa" from you. I recall your below-the-fold presentation of why Bobby Valentine was The One to be the new Red Sox manager. I don't recall any extenuating circumstances mentioned as you covered all the bases in your first article. It just seems ironic that you would be the guy writing the piece about Farrell and expect us to believe your analysis is spot on. I know that things change, but print is (almost) forever. At least one paragraph about your first opinion, unequivocally wrong as it is, would have acknowledged your incorrect analysis of Bobby V's tenure with the Sox. A little humility goes a long way toward redemption.

Romnesia may be epidemic in the US, but in Massachusetts, we have a vaccine against it: The Boston Globe archive.
I have some issues with Dan, especially the way he steers clear of holding Larry Lucchino accountable for the mess he's created as President of the Sox but, let's not forget, Dan's articles are opinion pieces that are meant to entertain and sometimes madden readers. He's the writer we love to hate, which makes him a great columnist.
Excellent work Sawmill!
Unless the Red Sox organization does a better job of getting better players, no manager no way, will help this team going forward.
I hope you're talking to your mates in the media when you say let's give John Farrell a shot. You guys sure didn't Valentine a shot.
*give
Belichick was a bust in Cleveland and Francona in Philadelphia so there's hope that Farrell will be much better in his second gig too. Maybe pitching coaches don't typically make good managers but, in this case, if Farrell can right the pitching staff, the real Achilles heel of The Collapse and 2012, the Sox are headed in the right direction. Now Larry has to behave himself and let Baseball Ops retool the team without his interference. If everyone sticks to doing what they're good at, including your boy Angry Larry (good thing you also said he was the smartest guy in the room, wouldn't want to offend the architect of the current disaster), and the team's willing to spend money, smartly for a change, the Sox should be right back in the thick of it. The big question is can the meddlers stop meddling.
My only disagreement is with the piece is the part on the interviews. The team needed to have a back up in case the Farrell negotiations fell through. You have to have options.
I agree -- let's give the guy a shot. (Brian O'Halloran by the way)
Why are you telling us to give him a shot? You're the guy who is hellbent on running people out of town.
