Red Sox got their man in John Farrell

Known quantity to front office, players

David Ortiz suspected from the start that the Red Sox eventually would hire John Farrell away from Toronto Blue Jays as their next manager.

General manager Ben Cherington, Ortiz knew, wanted somebody who would command respect in the clubhouse and work effectively with the front office to change the direction of the franchise after a 93-loss season.

The Red Sox took the easy way out. I see things going back to the country club atmosphere with Farrell. They got there yes man. Should have gone for Ausmus.

Otiz suspected the hiring of Farrell from the start, and so did your readers, who were reading pro-Farrell press releases disguised as "analysis" in the Globe since August. This is an example of how the Sox brass use the Globe writers: they ID someone they want (Gonzalez), start to plant ideas about how great that person would be for the Sox, and the Globe dutifully writes it up. When the Sox then get that person, whether it be a player or in this case a manager, the public says, "wow, what smart move." You were used. Again.
