Now Ben Cherington must prove himself

This time Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington didn’t have to swallow his pride along with his food.

The Chinese Food Chat at Larry Lucchino’s abode Saturday night that sealed John Farrell’s hiring must have gone much better than last year’s meal in Milwaukee with Dale Sveum. That lunch left Cherington in the lurch, overruled and undermined by club president/CEO Lucchino and ownership. It set the table for the team’s worst season since 1965.

What silly nonsense!!!!

So if Ben Cherington got his way and hired the immortal Dale Sveum???

The Sox would have won how many more games?   5??  Or maybe 10??

And if the immortal Sveum is here winning 5 or 10 more games than Bobby V did instead of being in Chicago losing 100+ with the Cubbies do the Sox pull the trigger on the Dodger trade??

So if Cherington got his way last year the Sox would have lost 80 + games and not made the playoffs, would still have the immortal Dale Sveum managing the team and  Beckett, Gonzo, Crawford and their $250 million contracts would still be here.

Tell me again how awful it was that Cherington got overruled last year????

Psssst.......hey Chris, Sox OWNERSHIP wanted John Farrell last year. The Jays said no.

This notion that the hire of Farrell this year means Cherington has power is such silly mediot thinking.

This must be one of the the new mediot talking points.

Get ready to hear it over and over again.  (yawning)

Let's hope that, unlike the aforementioned John wayne, Farrell is not a fraudulent fiction.

Gasper, you should stick to football. Are you seriously trying to claim that a different manager than Valentine would have yielded a vastly different result? Valentine may be a lot of things but not the reason the Sox finished in last place. Also, what about Cherington not supporting Valentine? That undercut Valentine with the players. And Dale Sveum? That guy is a doormat. I can't wait to see the Sox fail again this year now that Farrell is hailed as a saviour. Mediocrity in Toronto? What do you think it is in Boston? It will take years to remove the stench of the last few years including ownership selling.

"The quality of the roster" is all about Ben and it's about time for him to make a difference. Granted, he's been hamstrung by management and the previously odd moves of Theo, but his time has now arrived. Farrell is more than capable and fortunately has a head start due to his previous experience here, so there shouldn't be too many problems with the clubhouse or the expected on-field performance. It's going to very interesting over the next few months and let's hope that Little Ben transforms into Big Ben.
