BU men’s hockey rallies to beat UMass

On the road, down two goals, Boston University rallied to secure a weekend sweep of UMass with a 3-2 win at the Mullins Center in Amherst on Saturday night.

Senior Sean Escobedo potted the winner off a rebound with 1:22 left in regulation for the 13th-ranked Terriers (3-1-0, 3-1-0 Hockey East).

The Minutemen (1-3-0, 0-3-0), who saw a chance for their first league points evaporate on Escobedo’s goal, were up, 2-0, early in the second period after Shane Walsh’s power-play goal and Rocco Carzo’s penalty shot.

Wade Megan got BU on the board nearly five minutes into the second, and Matt Nieto tied it on a power-play strike 10 minutes later. Both goals were assisted by Garrett Noonan.

Matt O’Connor made 34 saves for the Terriers; he stopped 28 in a 5-2 win in Boston on Friday. Kevin Boyle stopped 32 shots for UMass Saturday.

Ivy Showcase Charles Grant made 29 stops, four players scored, and Dartmouth (1-0-1) topped Brown (1-1-0), 4-0, in the title game at Meehan Auditorium in Providence . . . Jesse Root had a goal and an assist, and Kenny Agostino and Antoine Laganiere both scored for Yale (1-0-1), which defeated Princeton (0-2-0) in the third-place game, 3-2.

UNH 0, Northeastern 0 — At Matthews Arena, the Huskies’ Bryan Mountain made a career-high 44 saves for his first shutout, and the Wildcats’ Casey DeSmith denied 34 shots to keep it a scoreless affair. No. 15 UNH (2-2-1, 2-2-1 Hockey East) and 12th-ranked Northeastern (4-0-1, 2-0-1) had not played a 0-0 game since the series began in 1931.

Vermont 2, Merrimack 2 — In North Andover, Mike Collins scored both goals for the Warriors (2-3-1, 1-1-1 Hockey East), while Pete Massar and Nick Luukko found the net for the Catamounts (0-1-2, 0-1-2).

Providence 3, Maine 0 — Shane Luke had a goal and an assist, Jon Gillies made 26 stops, and the host Friars (3-2-1, 2-1-0 Hockey East) shut out the Black Bears (1-6-0, 0-2-0).

Air Force 4, Robert Morris 1 — Jason Fabian scored two empty-net goals to support the Falcons (1-2-3, 1-0-1 Atlantic Hockey) in a road victory over the Colonials (2-2-0, 1-1-0).

AIC 4, Ala.-Huntsville 3 — Adam Pleskach scored twice in the second, including the power-play winner, and the Yellow Jackets (2-3-0) won at home.

Penn State 6, Sacred Heart 3 — Josh Phillips gave the host Pioneers (0-4-1) an early lead, but the Nittany Lions (4-2-0) proved too much to handle.

Colgate 5, Quinnipiac 1 — Eric Mihalik made 29 saves to back a balanced offensive attack for the Raiders (4-3-0) in a win over the Bobcats (3-2-1) in Hyannis.

UConn 2, Union 2 — Garrett Bartus’s 39-save effort preserved a tie for the host Huskies (0-2-1).

Women

BU 3, Robert Morris 0 — Kerrin Sperry finished with 24 stops and Sarah Lefort netted two goals for the third-ranked Terriers (7-1-0). Jill Cardella and Marie-Philip Poulin both had a pair of assists for the host team.

Harvard 9, Princeton 1 — Lyndsey Fry notched three goals and an assist, and Jillian Dempsey had three helpers and a goal for the ninth-ranked Crimson (2-0-0) on the road.

Northeastern 3, Maine 0 — Two goals by Kendall Coyne and a 23-save day by Chloe Desjardins powered the No. 7 Huskies (5-1-1) to a home win over the Black Bears (1-5-0). Megan Treacy stopped 29 shots for Maine.
