As the World Series ended Sunday night, six Red Sox players became free agents. They will hit the open market Saturday at 12:01 a.m.

The Sox have said they want to retain designated hitter David Ortiz and outfielder Cody Ross.

There is progress being made with Ortiz on a multiyear contract. Ortiz hit .318 with a 1.026 OPS, 23 home runs, and 60 RBIs in 90 games. He turns 37 next month.

If Ortiz is not signed by Saturday, the Red Sox are expected to make a qualifying offer of one year and $13.3 million. That would guarantee the Sox receiving a draft pick as compensation if Ortiz signs with another team.

Ross, who hit .267 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs in his first season with the Sox, could explore the market. The 31-year-old has the righthanded power that would make him attractive to many contenders.

Ross said at the end of the season that he was open to staying with the Red Sox but also valued the idea of playing on the West Coast. Ross and his family live in Arizona.

Righthander Aaron Cook, first baseman James Loney, righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka, righthander Vicente Padilla, and outfielder Scott Podsednik also became free agents.

Pedroia a finalist

Dustin Pedroia is a finalist for the American League Gold Glove at second base along with Dustin Ackley of the Mariners and Robinson Cano of the Yankees.

The awards will be announced on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Pedroia won Gold Gloves in 2008 and 2011.

Adrian Gonzalez, who was traded to the Dodgers on Aug. 25, is an American League finalist at first base along with Eric Hosmer of the Royals and Mark Teixeira of the Yankees.

Gonzalez won the Gold Glove last season and twice (2008-09) with the Padres.

Managers and coaches vote on the Gold Gloves.
