David Ortiz, Red Sox ‘not very close’ to a deal

The gap between what David Ortiz wants and what the Red Sox have offered could narrow quickly in the coming days, but for now, it’s “not very close,” according to a major league source.

The terms “progress” and “closing in” have been mentioned in reports on the early stages of talks, but unless things happen quickly, Ortiz could be out there in free agency.

I really hope they move on , time to get younger . If they were one David Ortiz away from being a contender - maybe , but they need so much more. Besides , I think he has been part of the attitude problem around this team the last few years, displaying that selfish ... ME FIRST - mentality that has crippled the team. From his annual  contract griping, the whole being underpaid and underappreciated routine is getting pretty old ... and barging in on Franconas press conference to complain about an rbi ... also , he would like everyone to think he was a team "leader" ... I don't see it - certainly not by the example he sets , you did not hear a word from him , when Beckett, Lackey, and Lester were having their beer and Kentucky Fried Pow Wows in the dugout as the team tanked it down the stretch. Maybe thats unfair - we did not hear from Pedroia for that matter  but besides all that ... I think this past year should scare them into reality ... a 38 year old ... limited to DH ... strictly DH coming off a an injury that caused to him to miss half the season - and he gets hurt running the bases on a HR ??? ... thanks Pappi for the memories , but of someone is willing to give him 15 MIL per year to DH ... more power to him , it would not be my choice.
