Patriots cut Sterling Moore

The Patriots announced a few roster moves Wednesday, including the release of defensive back Sterling Moore, one of the heroes of the AFC Championship game last January.

An undrafted rookie out of Southern Methodist last year, Moore has been listed on the injury report with a knee injury for much of this season but had been playing.

Against the Ravens in the AFC title game, Moore knocked the ball from the hands of receiver Lee Evans on what could have been a game-winning touchdown for Baltimore.

To fill the spots that opened with the release of Moore and Bobby Carpenter Tuesday, New England brought back two players who have been here before: linebacker Mike Rivera and defensive back Derrick Martin.

Rivera spent much of 2011 on New England’s practice squad and was also with the team in training camp.

Martin, a veteran who has played for the Ravens, Packers, and Giants, was with the Patriots in training camp but was among the final cuts Aug. 31.

The team also released tight end Alex Silvestro from the practice squad.
