The gap between what David Ortiz wants and what the Red Sox have offered could close fast and furious in the coming hours and days. But for now, it’s “not very close,” according to a major league source.
The words “progress” and “closing in” have been reported in the early stages of talks, but unless things happen quickly Ortiz could be out there in free-agency.

Oh, God no! Ortiz a free agent???? Oh, the horror. Come on, everyone knows he is asking too much. Including most other teams who can see that he is going to be on the DL for a good portion of any year he plays. A great hitter, and a good team mate. Doesn't play the field very much unless in a national league park. And well...... I have loved watching Ortiz over the years he has been here. He has been an entertaining, clutch hit kind of guy. But his refusal to see reality in front of him and his whining about not being "respected" because Sox managment won't make a bad business decision is getting old. Lets hope the Sox and Ortiz can work out a one year deal and move on to more important issues like the starting rotation (a shambles), the bullpen (messy) and the closer (a broken down, oft injured guy that Oakland didn't want anymore). The DH position is nice, but not of primary importance with regards to this teams needs.
