Sports log: Royals acquire Ervin Santana from Angels

After exercising their $13 million option on Ervin Santana’s contract, the Angels traded the righthander and cash to the Royals on Wednesday for minor league reliever Brandon Sisk. Santana has been a fixture in the Angels’ rotation since 2005, going 96-80 with a 4.33 ERA. But he struggled last season, going 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA while giving up a major league-worst 39 homers. Before acquiring Santana, the Royals declined their $8 million option for 2013 on righthander Joakim Soria after he missed all of last season because of Tommy John surgery . . . The Rays exercised contract options on pitcher James Shields, closer Fernando Rodney, and catcher Jose Molina, while declining a $6 million option on DH Luke Scott, paying him a $1 million buyout instead. Shields, gets a $9.5 million salary next year rather than a $1.5 million buyout . . . The Mets picked up the options for All-Star third baseman David Wright ($16 million) and Cy Young Award candidate R.A. Dickey ($5 million) . . . Reliever Rafael Soriano opted out of the final year of a three-year, $35 million contract with the Yankees to become a free agent. The Yankees can make Soriano a qualifying offer of $13.3 million before Friday’s deadline, and if he signs with another team, they will get draft compensation . . . The Orioles exercised an option on righthander Luis Ayala and declined their option on first baseman Mark Reynolds. Reynolds, due $11 million next season, gets a $500,000 buyout . . . The Blue Jays exercised their $3 million option on lefthander Darren Oliver and signed outfielder Rajai Davis to a one-year, $2.5 million contract . . . Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick became a free agent after declining his contract option for $5 million next season. Cincinnati reliever Ryan Madson, sidelined all of last season following elbow surgery, also became a free agent after declining his option.
