College hockey: Darren Rowe leads UMass upset of UNH

 Darren Rowe scored a power-play goal just over three minutes into overtime as UMass­ handed ninth-ranked New Hampshire its first loss, 2-1, in Amherst on Friday.

 Conor Sheary also scored for the Minutemen (2-3-0, 1-3-0 Hockey East), and Conor Allen assisted on both goals. Kevin Boyle had 25 saves in the win.

 The Wildcats (4-1-1, 2-1-1) got an early goal from Greg Burke and 34 saves from Casey DeSmith, but couldn’t overcome an 0-for-3 performance on power plays.

BC 4, Maine 2 — Johnny Gaudreau and Steven Whitney scored in the third to boost the top-ranked Eagles (5-1-0, 5-1-0 Hockey East) past the Black Bears (1-7-0, 0-3-0) in Orono.

North Dakota 4, BU 2 — Connor Gaarder had a hat trick to lead No. 5 North Dakota (3-1-1) over the Terriers (3-2-0) in Grand Forks. The Terriers got goals from freshmen Danny O'Regan and Ahti Oksanen.

Providence 3, Vermont 2 — Connor Brickley tied it for the host Catamounts (0-2-2, 0-2-2 Hockey East) early in the third, but the Friars (4-2-1, 3-1-0) got the winner a minute later from Mark Jankowski.

Merrimack 5, Northeastern 2 — The visiting Warriors (3-3-1, 2-1-1 Hockey East) topped the 15th-ranked Huskies (2-3-1, 2-3-1) behind two first-period goals from Jordan Heywood.

Dartmouth 7, Yale 4 — Matt Linblad and Eric Robinson scored twice as the Big Green (2-0-1) topped the visiting Bulldogs (1-1-1) in the teams’ ECAC opener.

Women

Harvard 3, Brown 0 — Laura Bellamy needed five saves for a shutout as the No. 6 Crimson (3-0-0, 3-0-0 ECAC) beat the host Bears (1-2-0, 1-2-0).

Northeastern 5, UConn 2 — Seventh-ranked Northeastern (6-1-1, 2-1-0 Hockey East) got two goals from Kendall Coyne to top host UConn (2-7-1, 1-2-0).
