David Ortiz, Red Sox reach deal

David Ortiz, who helped return the Red Sox to glory in 2004, will be around to see if he can do it again, agreeing with the team on Friday night to a two-year contract worth $26 million.

The deal includes incentives that could bring the total value to $30 million, according to teamsources.

The amount of money and number of years make absolutely no sense to me.  The Red Sox should have only offered 13.3 million, to ensure receiving a draft pick if that figure was not enough for David.  They should have left it at that.

Remember, this player missed a big part of the season this year, and also does not normally play defense. This could be a waste of 30 million, when you could have had a high draft pick if he left, or had him for one year at 13.3 million if he stayed.

Baseball has to get back to reality, and stop being a game where only the rich can afford to buy tickets to see a game. Spending 30 million on a player is a big investment, that helps ensure ticket prices stay high. I hope they have insurance in case he can't play.

Baseball players need to be paid, but not rediculously high salaries, out of keeping with their true value to a team.

I want to see the Red Sox go with youth, and rebuild from the farm system up.

P.S. I think they should have made an offer to Cody Ross, enough to ensure a draft pick in return if he leaves.

Way too much money!

"With Ortiz in the fold, the Red Sox need a first baseman, at least one outfielder, and a starting pitcher."  Well, that was a wise use of over $20M.

I love yoy Pappy!
