Infielder Maicer Izturis became the first major league free agent this offseason to join a new team, agreeing to a $10 million, three-year contract with the Blue Jays. The 32-year-old hit .256 with two homers and 20 RBIs last year for the Angels, stealing 17 bases in 19 attempts. Toronto also purchased righthander Jeremy Jeffress from Kansas City. In a separate deal, Kansas City traded lefthander Tommy Hottovy to Texas for a player to be named or cash . . . Colorado hired former All-Star shortstop and 1988 AL Rookie of the Year Walt Weiss to replace manager Jim Tracy late Wednesday night. Weiss’s most recent coaching job was guiding Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo. . . . Tino Martinez was hired as the Marlins’ hitting coach. Martinez had been a Yankees special assistant and an analyst for the YES Network. Martinez had a career average of .271 with 339 home runs for the Yankees, Mariners, Cardinals, and Rays.
