Among the changes resulting from the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 NHL season were rule modifications that promoted more scoring (such as legalizing the two-line pass and smaller goalie equipment). The impact was immediate, but scoring in the NHL has since regressed in all but one of the last six seasons, down to its lowest goals-per-game average since 2003-04. However, the number of 30-goal scorers has increased three years running, so perhaps that might deter the league from any additional rule changes to aid the offense.
