When Chaz Williams was given the keys to the University of Massachusetts men’s basketball program a year ago, there was little hesitation or concern on the part of coach Derek Kellogg, who placed the utmost trust in his point guard transfer from Hofstra. Kellogg knew Williams, who was prone to mashing the gas as a practice player during a year-long hiatus in 2010-11 per NCAA transfer rules, was not likely to drive the Minutemen into a ditch. “I’m more of a careful driver,’’ Williams said when asked if he had any reckless tendencies behind the wheel. “Don’t want to cause any accidents.’’
